Lorraine H. Morton was born in Winston Salem, North Carolina. She came to Evanston to pursue her Master’s degree at Northwestern University in education. She was part of the early hires of Black teachers in Evanston that began in 1942. Morton later was a Principal at Haven Junior High. In service to the Evanston community, she served as 5th ward alderman and later elected as Evanston’s first Black Mayor in 1992 and served until 2008. This recording was part of the “Through The Eyes of Us” series. In 2018, Shorefront produced a documentary film on her life entitled "Lorraine H. Morton: A Life Worthwhile".
